Privacy policy
Who we are
Retro Delights is operated by Lee Murray as a sole trader (“we”, “us”, “our”), based at 22 Auburn Drive, Urmston, Greater Manchester, M41 9LF, United Kingdom. For the purposes of UK GDPR we are the data controller for personal information collected through this site. You can contact us at help@retrodelights.co.uk.
What we collect, and why
We try to collect as little as we can. The categories below cover everything:
- Newsletter subscribers — your email address, so we can send you The Coverdisk and any related updates you opt into. Lawful basis: consent, withdrawable at any time via the unsubscribe link in any email or by emailing newsletter@retrodelights.co.uk.
- Account holders — your email address and a password hash (handled on our behalf by Netlify Identity), plus any optional display name. Used to authenticate you and provide account features. Lawful basis: contract.
- Insert Coin members — in addition to the above, we hold a Stripe customer ID linking you to your subscription. Card details are handled directly by Stripe; we never see or store them. Lawful basis: contract.
- Message Board commenters — the display name and comment text you submit on chat articles, plus the IP address and timestamp captured by Netlify Forms for spam prevention. Lawful basis: legitimate interest (publishing the comment you submitted for publication; preventing abuse).
- High-score players — the alias you choose and your score, stored in Supabase. No identifying information beyond what you type in. Lawful basis: legitimate interest.
Who we share data with
We use the following processors. Each handles your data only on our instructions and under their own UK/EU GDPR commitments:
- Netlify — site hosting, Identity (auth), Forms (comments).
- Stripe — subscription billing for Insert Coin.
- Supabase — high-score storage.
- Cloudinary — image delivery (no personal data — just public images).
- Adobe Typekit — web font delivery (Adobe’s privacy policy applies to font requests).
We never sell your data. We don’t use third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
How long we keep it
- Account & subscription data — as long as your account exists, plus up to 7 years afterwards for tax / accounting records (legal obligation).
- Newsletter subscribers — until you unsubscribe.
- Comments — published indefinitely unless you ask us to remove them. If you delete your whole account, comments on shared threads are anonymised to “Former member” rather than deleted, so other people’s replies still make sense.
- High-score entries — published indefinitely unless you ask us to remove them.
- Deleted accounts — once you delete your account (see below) we erase your personal data after a short grace period; only tax/accounting records (above) and anonymised shared-thread contributions remain.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to: access the data we hold on you, ask us to correct or delete it, ask us to restrict or stop processing it, ask us to send it to another provider in a portable format, and object to any processing we’re doing on legitimate-interest grounds. Email help@retrodelights.co.uk and we’ll respond within one calendar month.
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk — though we’d appreciate the chance to fix it first.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account yourself from your account page — no need to email us. Deleting cancels your membership immediately and schedules everything on your account (your shelf, profile, saved preferences, scores and uploaded images) for permanent erasure after a 14-day grace period. You can reverse it any time within those 14 days by signing back in.
Two things lawfully outlive the erase: (1) records we’re required to keep for tax and accounting (payment and invoice data, kept up to 7 years — with your identity removed where possible); and (2) contributions you made to shared discussions (comments and Lost & Found threads), which are anonymised to “Former member” rather than deleted, so others’ replies still make sense. Everything that is solely yours is erased.
Prefer we do it for you, or want a copy of your data first? Email help@retrodelights.co.uk.
Messaging other members
If you turn on in-site messaging (The Mailbag), we store the messages you send and receive — their content, timestamps, and who they’re between — so we can deliver them, show you your history, and look into any reports. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running a safe trading community and providing the service you asked for. We’ll only email you about new messages if you’ve left those notifications on (turn them off any time in your account). We never give your email address to another member. Reported or moderated messages, and messages you delete, are kept for up to 90 days so we can investigate abuse, then permanently removed; your ordinary messages stay as your archive until you or we delete them. Deleting your account removes your side of any conversation (shown to the other person as “Former member”) while keeping theirs. Want a copy of your messages? Email help@retrodelights.co.uk.
Changes to this policy
If we change anything material we’ll update the date at the top of this page and, for account holders, email you a heads-up.
Cookies & local storage
We don’t use any third-party advertising cookies. We do use a small number of first-party cookies and a fair amount of localStorage — a similar mechanism your browser provides for sites to remember your settings.
Strictly necessary
These let the site function. They don’t require consent under PECR.
- Netlify Identity / GoTrue session cookies — keep you signed in.
- Stripe Checkout cookies — set during the payment flow to prevent fraud (Stripe’s own).
- Supabase auth cookie — keeps your leaderboard session active.
Local storage we set
None of these contain personal data — they’re site-state preferences kept on your device. Clearing your browser’s site data removes them all:
rd_theme— remembers your chosen visual theme (Invader / Tron / Force / default).rd_logged_in— a fast-path flag so the site doesn’t flash “Sign in” for returning members.rd_credits,rd_daily_streak,rd_daily_last— the daily coin and game continues system.rd_quiz_era,rd_quiz_color— your “Which Era Are You?” result, used on the account page.rd_s_*— secret achievements you’ve unlocked (11 in total).rd_visited_leaderboard,rd_audio_*,rd_a_grid_pausedand similar — small UI preferences (whether you’ve seen something, whether ambient audio is on, whether the About-page grid animation is paused).
How to clear
Browser → Settings → Privacy → Clear site data for retrodelights.co.uk. This will sign you out and reset all the preferences above.
Terms of service
Accepting these terms
By using Retro Delights you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.
Your account
Accounts are personal — one per person. Keep your password confidential. You’re responsible for activity under your account; let us know immediately at members@retrodelights.co.uk if you suspect it’s been compromised.
Comments and other contributions
You retain ownership of anything you post (comments, high-score aliases, etc.) but grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to display and store it as part of the site. You’re responsible for what you post; please don’t post anything illegal, abusive, infringing, or that you don’t have the right to share. We may remove anything that breaches these terms without notice.
Messaging other members
In-site messaging (The Mailbag) is for genuine, respectful contact with other members about things on Retro Delights — a game someone’s listed, a case they helped solve, and the like. You must be 18 or over to turn it on. Don’t use it to harass, spam, scam, or send unwanted or unlawful content; don’t ask anyone to pay upfront before you’ve dealt with them; and don’t share anyone’s private details. Trades happen off Retro Delights — we don’t verify members or handle payments, so take the usual care. You can block any member and report any message; we review reports and may remove messages or withdraw messaging access. Messaging is a privilege we can suspend or remove to keep the community safe.
Our content
Articles, images, videos, code, and other materials we publish are owned by us or licensed to us. You’re welcome to read them, save them for personal use, and share short quotes with credit + a link back. For anything more (republishing, commercial use, training AI models on our content), please ask first.
Insert Coin (paid memberships)
Subscriptions are governed by these terms plus the cancellation & refunds section below. Pricing is shown on the Insert Coin page at the time of purchase. We may change pricing for new sign-ups; existing subscriptions continue at their current rate until the next renewal.
Acceptable use
Don’t do anything that would damage the site, other users, or our infrastructure. That includes (but isn’t limited to) automated scraping at volume, attempting to bypass paywalls, abusing the comment / high-score systems, or reverse-engineering subscription mechanisms.
Liability
We provide Retro Delights “as is” and don’t guarantee it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, our liability for anything arising out of your use of the site is limited to the amount you’ve paid us in the previous twelve months. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death, personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or anything else that can’t be limited under UK law.
Changes
We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be flagged at the top of this page and, for account holders, emailed.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. Any dispute will be heard in the courts of England and Wales.
Cancellation & refunds
14-day cancellation right (UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013)
If you take out an Insert Coin subscription, you have a statutory right to cancel within 14 calendar days of the purchase date for a full refund — unless you have explicitly accessed members-only content during that period, which counts as having begun consuming the digital service. By accessing any /insert-coin/ article during the 14-day window you agree that the service has begun and waive your right to a full refund.
To exercise the cancellation right within the window, sign in and visit /account/ → Manage Membership, or email members@retrodelights.co.uk.
Cancelling outside the 14-day window
You can cancel any time. Cancellations take effect at the end of your current billing period — you keep access until then but won’t be charged again. We don’t offer pro-rata refunds for partial months/years (other than the statutory 14-day right above).
How to cancel
Sign in → /account/ → Manage Membership opens the Stripe customer portal where you can cancel, change payment method, or view invoices. If you can’t access the portal for any reason, email members@retrodelights.co.uk and we’ll cancel for you.
Failed payments
If a renewal payment fails, Stripe will retry over a few days. If it still hasn’t succeeded after that, your subscription will be paused and members-only content will be locked again. You can re-subscribe at any time.
Refunds for technical failures
If we’ve charged you but the service has been substantially unavailable for an extended period, email us — we’ll either credit you a billing period or refund proportionally, at your choice.
One-off paid products (Collection Appraisal PDFs)
Members can buy an extra Collection Appraisal PDF for £5 once their quarterly free PDF has been used. Anyone — member or not — can also buy a Collection Appraisal PDF of a public member’s collection at /member/<slug>/ for £5. These are one-off purchases, processed by Stripe; we never see or store your card details.
Because the PDF is delivered immediately on payment, the UK 14-day cancellation right does not apply once the file has been generated — by completing checkout you agree to immediate fulfilment and waive that right for this purchase. If the PDF fails to generate or arrive, email help@retrodelights.co.uk and we’ll either resend it or refund the £5 in full.
Affiliate disclosure
What this means
Some links on Retro Delights are affiliate links. If you click one and go on to buy or sell something on the linked site, Retro Delights may earn a small commission from that site at no extra cost to you. We label these links with the standard rel="sponsored" attribute so browsers, screen readers, and search engines can identify them as commercial.
Where they appear
- eBay Partner Network — in the “Sell on eBay” / “Find on eBay” links inside your collection’s detail view, when applicable. Clicking these takes you to a relevant eBay.co.uk search; if you complete a sale or purchase there, eBay pays us a share of their listing fee.
Editorial independence
Affiliate links never influence what we write, review, or recommend. We add them only where they’d already be useful to you (e.g. you’ve marked a game as Gone and might want to find a replacement copy). If a link wouldn’t serve you, it isn’t there.
Opt-out
You can navigate to eBay.co.uk directly if you’d rather not use an affiliate link. Doing so makes no difference to your experience — the search you’d run is the same; we just don’t get the commission.
